Estienne MARCEL       (ID #I8428)

(male)
Father: Guillaume MARCEL (b. ABT 1645, d. 1698)
Mother: Marie BOUCHAYER (b. ABT 1647)

Family 1 : Catherine JULIAN (dates unknown)
  1. +Pierre MARCEL (d. 23 AUG 1780)
  2.  Isaac MARCEL (dates unknown)
  3.  Samuel MARCEL (dates unknown)

In 1694, he was enumerated with other refugees in the village of Bursin, a carpenter age 30 with his mother age 60 from Marignac, Dauphiné. He was not on the listing of 1693. Origin revealed in record of marriage bans of his son Pierre Marcel. A document of François Gaspard Finaz, notary at Nyon, 12 oct 1715, has the Conseil de Gland renting property to Estienne Marcel "français réfugié de St.-Jean-de-Rens en Dauphiné", surely an attempt at St.-Jean'd'Hérans.

An entry in the registers of the hospital for French refugees at Lausanne (FHL microfilm #0885762) shows that "Estienne Marcel du Dofiné est arrivé malade de l'Evesché par billiect de Monsieur Sudre", 12 dec 1688. He was released from the hospital 30 jan 1689. But which "Evesché"? The local "esvesché" of Lausanne had long since ceased to be a significant entity even for judicial purposes, as had that of Geneva. Could this be a reference to the "Evesché" of Basel? Or something even less obvious?

Françoise MARCEL       (ID #I11529)

(female)
Father: Pierre MARCEL (d. 23 AUG 1780)
Mother: Elizabeth TILLIANT (b. ABT 1702, d. 25 OCT 1778)

Family 1 : George Gabriel DELAGRANGE (b. abt 1737, d. 05 JUN 1779)
  1.  Elie Abraham Samuel DELAGRANGE (b. 13 JUL 1768)
  2.  Samuel Charles DELAGRANGE (b. 06 NOV 1770)
  3.  Jeanne Françoise Olympe DELAGRANGE (b. 06 NOV 1770, bur. 13 MAY 1772)

She is identified on the occasion of her marriage, as the daughter of Pierre Marcel habitant perpetuel à Lausanne. At first, it seemed she must be an unknown daughter of Pierre Marcel and Susanne Cellier. However, the designation of "habitant" better describes Pierre son of Etienne Marcel, since the Pierre who married Susanne Cellier was not a "habitant" in 1767, but a "bourgeois assoufferté" of Lausanne. With this parentage, it is possible she is the Jeanne Françoise who was baptised in 1742.

However, at the baptism of her son Elie Abraham Samuel Delagrange in 1768, the sponsors are all from the descendancy of Pierre son of Guillaume Marcel: Jean Abraham Marcel, Paul Samuel Marcel, Susanne Beylon (her mother was Judith, daughter of the elder Pierre Marcel), and Judith Elizabeth Marcel. It might be, however, that Françoise was the only remaining descendant of Pierre son of Etienne Marcel. It will be necessary to follow this family in more detail in hopes of finding more direct evidence.

Strong suspicion that the Moyse Marcel with wife Catherine Moulaz "of Crupes au mandement de Boindeax en Dauphine", tailor, whose 3 children are baptised at Grandson 1699-1707, is a son of Guillaume, or else of the Jean Marcel, "vieux et malade" who was admitted to the refugee hospital in 1692 (from Dié, Dauphiné), or of Etienne Marcel of Dauphiné at the same hospital 1689. Also, a Sara Marcel was wife of Jean François Martin; they baptised a child Catin in 1706 at Lausanne, named after the wife of Etienne Marcel.

[14630] Date of contract recorded by Rey, notaire at St. Jean-d'Hérans, now at the archives départementales d'Isère, at Grenoble (cited by Pierre Béthoux, but we were unable to find a listing for this notary on the web site of the Archives Départementales de l'Isère).

Father: Albert Frédéric Louis Henri MARCEL (b. 8 MAY 1772, d. BEF 1820)

Family 1 : Jeanne Marguerite BETTEX (d. aft 1881)

We found a notice of his birth and baptism filed in a dossier for the Marcel family in the Archives de la Ville de Lausanne. Also in the dossier are several letters requesting assistance for himself and his wife, both of whom were in poor health and unable to support themselves.

The dossier notes that on 21 février 1820, an "Acte d'origine" was delivered to "Henri-Louis-Isaac fils naturel de Henri MARCEL et de Louise-Susanne Milliquet de Lausanne, né le 29 octobre 1799 et baptisé le 5 janvier 1800 dans le temple de Montherond." The dossier continues, "Henri-Louis-Isaac a épousé Jeanne-Marguerite Bettex. Il est décédé le 28 janvier 1880 à Donneloye où il doit avoir passé la plus grand partie de sa vie comme domestique de campagne. Sa veuve, facultés mentales altérées, est pensionnaire de la Commune. En 1881, à St.Barthélemy."

The letters reveal a life of desperation:

The dossier does not contain any response from the city of Lausanne. It might be possible to find something in the account books of the city.

Information obtained by the Marcell family in the United States from the Municipal Archives of Lausanne indicates that Henri Siméon, one of three illegitimate children of Henri Marcel, was the grandfather of Paul Marcel, bookbinder and papermaker of Lausanne (active in 1890's). At the time of his marriage, Henri Siméon and his bride were living at Gland. The banns recorded at Lausanne call the bride Elizabeth Jonzier and note that she was the daughter of Jean Benedict Jonzier and Magdelaine Golaron of Gland, and that she was also the widow of Charles Dubois. The marriage record appears to call her Zourier, but this could just be a difficulty of the script.

Henry Charles MARCEL       (ID #I25640)

(male)
Father: Henri Siméon MARCEL (b. 16 NOV 1798, d. 9 OCT 1848)
Mother: Marie Françoise GRANGE (b. 31 JUL 1806, d. 3 MAR 1891)

Family 1 : Louise BECK (b. 6 MAR 1847)
  1.  Caroline Françoise MARCEL (b. 24 APR 1877)
  2.  Charles Henry MARCEL (b. 1 JUN 1880)

He arrived at New York on the ship Admiral 29 dec 1862, from Le Havre. He enlisted 12 apr 1864 in the 165th Regiment, New York Infantry. At the Madison Street German Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, 18 apr 1875, Henry Charles Marcel married Louise Beck. His petition to become a naturalized citizen of the Unites States was filed 01 oct 1868 in the Southern District Court of New York (petition #299, volume 188), but there is another petition dated 11 oct 1880 that seems to pertain to the same person, Swiss in origin and a veteran of the US Army (petition #40, volume 13). Perhaps the first petition was not successful. In spite of this, his descendants also have a "feuille de route" showing that, as of 1871, he was a soldier in France, and had been given permission to travel to Le Havre and then to New York. After his death, his widow and children moved to Alsace. Descendants still live at Hagenau, Bas-Rhin, France. While his birth and baptism are recorded at Rolle, including the statement that the family was then living at Rolle, the "feuille de route" says he was born at Ferney-Voltaire, France, a discrepancy that remains to be explained. The "état civil" of Ferney-Voltaire has been digitized on the web site of the Archives du Département de l'Ain; we found no Marcel births in 1842. Perhaps the deception of French citizenship became necessary as a way to join the French army in 1871? By thus declaring French citizenship, had he invalidated his American citizenship, thus requiring the new petition for naturalization in 1880? Or, was the petition of 1868 only regarded as the "declaration of intention", since it is not accompanied by the order of the court granting citizenship?

                                                                 _Louis Pierre MARCEL ___________+

A surprising record in South Carolina has this man marrying to Fleurie Debat dit Cazenove or Casaneuve in 1805, with a child Jean François "Hinlock" Marcel born in 1809 (nature of the primary source is not yet known to us). Marriage settlement executed in Paris but recorded in South Carolina. Many mentions found in cursory searches of notarial records of Lausanne. Documents in South Carolina Archives relating to commerce or finance still to be analyzed. A report by Louis Grivel, archivist of the city of Lausanne (1952) gives exact dates and additional details for parts of this story.

The marriage settlement, executed in Paris and later recorded in South Carolina in the following form, allows us to infer that Fleurie and her parents were French citizens, otherwise we should have expected some mention of their origin:

Family 2 : Rose Catherine REHGARTH (dates unknown)
  1.  Alexandrine Frederique Charlotte MARCEL (b. 17 AUG 1778)

Ancestral File has second wife Rose Catharine Rehgarth as mother of last 2 children, but they were born before the death of the first wife. Also, another entry has the same Rose Catharine Rehgarth married to the son, Jean-Pierre-Samuel Marcel. Registers of Lausanne and Bière resolve this problem. At least one entry in the registers at Bière indicates Jean Abram was the proprietor (owner) of the paper mill there. A record of Frederich Bergier, notary at Lausanne, places him at Bière as early as 02 jun 1774.

The ownership and occupancy of the paper mill is a subject for further study. An edict of Their Excellencies of Bern dated 26 may 1767 restates a long-standing prohibition against the export of rags, the raw material of the paper industry, at the request of "Anthoine Reboul, négociant à Morges, admodieur & possesseur des fabriques de Papier de Bière & de Clarens." We interpret this to mean that he was renting the mill at Bière and actually owned the one at Clarens. Since Reboul is a name that figures in the Johannot genealogy, it is possible that we have here another family connection involving the paper trade. (The edict was transcribed in the registers of Jaques David Burnand, notary and Curial de Moudon, ACV DL 11/43. )

In the Archives Cantonales Vaudoises, there is a collection of papers (ACV P Reboul) from the enterprise of François Reboul of Morges, son of Anthoine, covering the dates 1779-1834. François was proprietor of the paper mill at Clarens (at Montreux). There does not seem to be anything in this collection concerning the mill at Bière.

The local historian Henri Burnier prepared a history of the paper mill at Bière 1603-1837, kindly communicated to us by Charles de Vogel. Burnier seems to have used mostly sources in the archives of Bière, and so he missed some significant documents in the records of the notaries (see the notes for his son Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel). Also, he missed an interesting reminiscence that we found in a letter to the Syndic of Lausanne dated 27 apr 1887, from Louis Pittet-Jotterand, Syndic of Bière:

M. Pittet, too, missed the succession of Abram Marcel by his son Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel, but this is the only document we have seen that mentions such an early date for the building in which the paper mill operated. In 1603, Hugues Teste, notary and bourgeois de Rolle, obtained a patent from Their Excellencies of Bern giving him, in effect, a monopoly on the manufacture of paper in the Pays de Vaud. The document states that Teste had constructed a mill at Bière, but it does not say when he had done this (transcript in Burnier's account of the paper mill). It is, of course, not necessarily true that Teste's mill was the first one on the site. No independent confirmation of his claims has been located.

[2386] Actual birth date not listed in baptismal record.

[14508] double wedding, bride noted as dau. of late Mattieu Johannot, bourgeois of Morges, "dans l'Eglise d'Echandens".

Jean François Kinloch MARCEL       (ID #I10964)

(male)
Father: Jaques Albert MARCEL (b. 10 JUL 1773, d. 28 MAR 1819)
Mother: Fleurie DEBAT (b. 30 JUN 1785)

Family 1 : Virginie GUYE (b. 8 JUL 1823, d. AFT 1885)
  1.  Charles Albert MARCEL (b. 23 MAY 1856, d. AFT 1885)

At the time of the birth of his son in 1856, he was living at Boudry, Neuchâtel. His name is given in at least a couple places as François Hinlock Marcel, but his marriage and death records at Champvent are clear, it is Kinlock or Kinloch. Evidently, he was named after Francis Kinloch of Charleston, SC. The marriage record notes he had lived in Virginia, and we found him, apparently still single, on the 1850 census of Key West, Florida. There is probably much more to be learned about his life!

Since he was born in South Carolina, he was a citizen of the United States. On 25 sep 1854, at Charleston, South Carolina, he applied for a passport. At that time, he was 44 years old, 5' 8" tall, with hazel eyes, a broken nose, and gray hair.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the marriage of Sir James Kinloch of Edinburgh, Scotland to Marguerite Wild of Bern is found at Pomy, near Yverdon, 09 oct 1731.

A certificate attesting to his baptism was filed along with his marriage banns at Champvent (ACV Ec 22). This information appears to have been copied from the registers of the état civil of Lausanne. It was probably recorded at Lausanne after the family returned from South Carolina. If it can be found in those registers, it is possible that the original certificate from St. Philip's Church in Charleston, South Carolina will be found in ACV Ec.

[3904] Marriage record notes a certificate of baptism was placed on file at the Cure de Champvent. It might still exist, and it should contain the name of the church in Charleston, SC where he was baptised.

[14708] Marriage record at Champvent notes his birth date and parentage. Banns were published at Lausanne, Rances, Champvent, and Les Verrières (Neuchâtel), but thanks to a dispensation, not in America.

Family 2 : Anna Sarah JONES (dates unknown)

This seems to be the same Félix Marcel whose manuscript "La Famille Boutan" (circa 1840) was mentioned in the catalogue of the exhibition Le Refuge Huguenot en Suisse (1985) at Lausanne. A small gourd inscribed with the initials HB and a huguenot cross, originally from the Boutan family and passed down to the heirs of Félix Marcel, was shown at the exhibit. The donor was Pierre Charles Marcel of St.-Germain-en-Laye, France. This would seem to be the branch that went into banking.

His second marriage is confirmed in the indexes to the civil registration in England. His birth date is given as 30 mar 1797 at least once in the dossier of the Marcel family at the Archives de la Ville de Lausanne.

  5. +Mary Georgette MARCEL (b. 29 SEP 1809, d. 15 OCT 1873)

1850 census, Brown Co., IL gives age implying a birthdate of 1768. Baptism in Lausanne was witnessed by grandparents Pierre and Susanne Cellier Marcel, and Mme. the widow Susanne Johannot, and Jeanne Marie Imbard née Johannot. Text of marriage bann: "Jean Pierre Samuel fils de feu Jean Abram Marcel de Lausanne & de Susane Joannot & Anne Jeane Georgete fille d'Isaac Samuel Maior de Ballens et de Rose Nivet."

The movements of the family from 1800 to 1805, when they left Europe, were not known until recently. Family notes put the birth of Charles, and possibly also of Marie Georgette, in Bern, which had a large French Huguenot community. The family came to America on the ship Liberty (Strassburger & Hinke, Pennsylvania-German Pioneers, vol. 2, p. 175), sailing from Amsterdam 04 aug 1805, arriving at Philadelphia 18 oct 1805. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Marcel from Lausanne with 3 children under age 14, the list of steerage passengers included 3 other passengers from Lausanne with French surnames: Mr. Obussieur, Mr. Albert, and Mrs. Albert. The three children would have to include Louise and Charles, and Jane, in spite of the family notes. Mary was actually born on this side of the Atlantic. The actual birthplace of Charles was only recently discovered, in the village of Divonne-les-Bains (Ain), France, where Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel was working as a paper-maker. Divonne was then part of the arrondissement of Genève, département of Léman, following Napoleon's occupation of the area. A family document there was witnessed by Antoine Albert, a neighbor, prompting us to wonder if he might be the same Mr. Albert who appears on the passenger list. The Marcel and Albert families are listed together on the customs list recorded upon arrival in Philadelphia.

Family notes put Jean Pierre in the service of Daniel Carroll, "brother of the signer of the Declaration of Independence"; however, this seems unlikely, since Daniel (b. 1764, "of Duddington") and Charles (b. 1767, "of Belle Vue") Carroll, brothers, first cousins once removed of Charles Carroll "the signer" (1737-1832), purchased the Patterson paper mill on 05 jun 1811, likely after the Marcel family had braved the wilderness to settle in Lexington, KY (for an account of Charles Carroll "of Belle Vue", see Robert F. McNamara (1980), "Charles Carroll of Belle Vue, co-founder of Rochester", Rochester History 42(4)). The paper mill, apparently the only one in the vicinity of Georgetown, was built, according to information from the National Park Service regarding Rock Creek Park, about 1800. It was located on Rock Creek near the north end of P Street, on the east bank of the creek, at the boundary of the Federal City. The source for the connection to the Carroll family is not given — was it perhaps an indenture of some kind? The Marcel family does not appear on the 1810 censuses of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, or Kentucky. Separate schedules for the District of Columbia have also been checked. About 1811, they are supposed to have moved to Kentucky, where Georgette died in 1812 — but this contradicts the account prepared by the Archivist of Lausanne, who says she died before 08 jan 1810, leaving her 4 children as heirs to some parcels of land near Ballens. It is doubtful that the archivist, working from notarial and court records, was mistaken as to the date. Further complicating the story is the information given in Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel's naturalization papers in Butler Co., OH, 15 oct 1840, in which he states that he declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States before the Court of the County of Washington, DC on 16 jan 1813. One wonders if he did not leave his children in the care of another family and return to Vaud to settle his wife's estate, making his declaration on his second arrival in the United States. The declaration referred to has not been located, though it is possible the problem is that the identity of the court has not been specified correctly.

The marriage of Jane Marcel in 1817 places the family in Fayette Co., KY. The tax list of that year shows the first appearance of "John Mercel", who was taxed for one horse. In 1818, he appears again, as does a David McCoy, Jr. beside him on the list (David Sr. had been in the lists for some years). Both "John Mercell" and David McCoy Jr. are absent from these lists after 1818. By 1820 the Marcel family is on the census in Adair Co., KY., and also in neighboring Cumberland Co. about the same time for several land grants. By 1825, they are in Jessamine Co., KY, where Charles appears as late as 1840. Later, he moved to Nicholas Co. By 1832, Jean Pierre appears with his daughter Louisa McCoy in connection with the marriage of her daughter Georgette McCoy to Isaac Whitesides in Warren Co., OH (the latter apparently living in Hamilton Co. somewhere near the town of Montgomery). In 1840, as we have seen, Jean Pierre appears in Butler Co., where his daughter had married Thomas O'Hara. Jean Pierre must have lived with them from that time on, accompanying them to Brown Co., IL about 1844 and dying there after the 1850 census. The date on the 1850 census schedule is 13 sep 1850, the last date at which we know Jean Marcel was alive.

Why, exactly, did Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel leave Vaud? This question is turning out to be more complicated, and more interesting, than we first thought. His father Jean Abraham Marcel was the owner of the paper factory at Bière when he died in 1793. What happened between 1793 and 1802, when we find the family in Divonne-les-Bains? We are beginning to fill in the gaps.

15 apr 1797: Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel, proprietor of the paper mill at Bière, obtains a loan of 20,000 livres at 4% interest from Albert Duveluz (a relative) and Félix and Albert Marcel, half payable in 4 years, the remainder in 6 years.

May, 1798: A census was taken in the early days of the Napoleonic protectorate, the "République Helvétique". For the village of Bière, one paper mill is noted, owned by "le citoyen Marcel", employing 16 persons.

29 mar 1799: As described in a later record, Jean Marcel, proprietor of the paper mill at Bière, obtains loan of 20,000 livres from Daniel Grand. (This cannot be Jean Abraham Marcel, who died in 1793, and only Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel appears in the church records of Bière by this time.) The loan carries 4% interest and is payable in 4 monthly installments, with any unpaid amount to carry 5% interest after that time has elapsed. We surmise that the principal was used to pay off the previous loan. As security, Marcel pledges his property at Bière, which is described by reference to the surrounding landowners, as well as property at Ballens. He also lists the existing debts against these sureties.

24 oct 1801: Jeanne Françoise Pernet, wife of Félix Marcel, acknowledges debt of 13,000 livres to Daniel Grand, pledging various parcels at Cossonay as surety. The debt was the remainder of a loan of 20,000 livres dating from 29 mar 1799, from Grand to Jean Marcel of Bière, with Albert Duveluz as second, and the loan was partly repaid by a "collocation" or settlement. (Louis Fevot, notary at Lausanne)

18 may 1802: Jeanne Françoise Pernet, wife of Félix Marcel, conveys to her son Albert Marcel various parcels including the paper mill, which she had obtained through a judgement against Jean Marcel (Louis Fevot, notary at Lausanne).

20 jun 1802: Albert son of Félix Marcel, négociant at Lausanne, after receiving title from his mother Jeanne Françoise Pernet (above), grants power of attorney to have the sale of the paper mill registered in Bière, to Jean Jacob Oehl of Basel (Isaac Louis Gabriel Bourillon, notary at Lausanne).

From the chronology, it is clear that Jean Marcel of Bière is our Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel, and that he was unable to repay his loans. His paper mill became the property of his aunt who assumed the loan, then it was sold. In 1798, the citizens of Vaud (assisted by Napoleon) rebelled against the occupation of the Bernese. A period of financial chaos ensued. The new government passed through a number of false starts and crises, including an episode called the "Bourla-Papey", a sort of peasants' uprising against all vestiges of the feudal order, such as hereditary titles held in town archives, some of which were burned in 1802. It is recorded that one of the "lieutenants" in the Bourla-Papey movement was one Henri Marcel, very likely a cousin (Albert Frederic Louis Henri Marcel, born in 1772) of our Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel. It is therefore possible that he felt he had suffered personal as well as financial losses and wanted to start over. He arrived at Divonne during a period when the new order was still not established, and it was not clear whether Divonne would end up eventually as Swiss or French territory. The wars and political upheavals which followed may well have been the last straw that convinced him it would not be possible to establish a business in such a politically unstable climate. The attraction of the New World, whose financial opportunities were well known to the financiers of Lausanne, including some of his Marcel relatives, must have been irresistable.

In 2009, our colleague Catherine Minck-Brandt discovered a dossier concerning the Marcel family at the Archives de la Ville de Lausanne. The dossier contains some 40 items relating to the descendants of Pierre Marcel and Jeanne Richard, especially in their interactions with the municipal authorities. Among these we found correspondence between Genevieve Marcell Davis and Louis Grivel, then the archivist of Lausanne, dating from the 1950's. An undated letter from Mrs. Davis to the archivist, to which he responded on 11 feb 1952, reveals some facts that did not find their way into the family notes that are found today at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City: "Nous avons des documents signés par Jean Pierre Marcel et venant du comté Cumberland, au Kentucky. En 1805, le nom de Monsieur Marcel est mentioné dans le journal de Monsieur Wirt, chez qui il a était invité à Richmond, en Virginie."

In the 1950's, the family does not seem to have known that our Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel arrived in Philadelphia, nor that at least two of his cousins had traveled to the New World. At the present time, we have no information about these interesting statements by Mrs. Davis, but they are clues that should be pursued. The Wirt in question is almost certainly William Wirt, an attorney who later became Attorney General of the United States. His papers are in several different collections, notably the Maryland Historical Society and the Library of Congress, but we have not discovered the item referred to by Mrs. Davis.

The Archives d'Etat de Genève has a large collection of passports issued during the period when Geneva and the surrounding area was the Département de Léman. The collection also includes records of passports for people entering Léman from the Canton de Vaud. It may be possible to locate information about the movements of Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel and also of his cousin Henri Marcel in these records. The Archives Cantonales Vaudoises has even more material, including a collection designated PP 416, consisting of about 12 linear meters of papers from the Marcel family of Lausanne. Among these papers we found four letters (one a copy, the other three originals) from Jean Marcel to his cousins in Switzerland, giving some further details about his life and the movements of his family.

Miscellany, should be investigated further: Cumberland Co., Kentucky, Deed Book E (1824-1825), index on RootsWeb, mentions John B. Marcel of Fayette Co. to Charles Marcel of same; George Mermond (=Mermoud?) of Jessamine Co. to John Marcel of same, no page numbers given. Frankfort Argus, 28 feb 1827, newspaper notice about lost horse belonging to John Marcel at "the Franklin Mills, four miles from Frankfort, on Main Elkhorn.

[1584] Where: 1820 Adair Co., KY; 1850 Brown Co., IL. "True copy" of citizenship papers from Butler Co, OH (dated 1840) indicates declaration of intention was at Washington DC 16 jan 1813 — however, National Archives failed to locate declaration in 1975.

[14507] Annonces de Marriages de Lausanne, 1790-1800, p. 143. Banns were published 16, 23, and 30 jul 1797, giving names of his parents and of her father. Marriage recorded at Apples, notes his residence at Bière.
