Records at Frankfort indicate he removed to Paris with his family. They can be identified with the Jean Evrard Guillaume and Susanne Jaqueline Johannot who baptised two children at Morges in 1800. He is probably the same Guillaume Johannot noted as sponsor for a baptism in Paris 19 sep 1802 at the Chapelle de Suède (SHPF MSS 1610). At that time, he was a négociant living at Rue Papillon no 337.
[3259] Confession of faith at Frankfurt 10 mar 1782 gives age as 15 years.

This is the Jean or Joseph Jean Johannot identified in several editions of the Encyclopédie Larousse, born at Geneva 30 jun 1748, died at Echallens 15 jan 1829, identified as a "politician" because he was a member of the Directoire of Haut-Rhin in 1792, and voted for the execution of the king. He is noted as the mayor of Vaucresson (Hauts-de-Seine), 1799-1810. The Jean Johannot identified in the testaments relating to Jean Daniel Johannot is the only person who seems to fit these dates. Information should be sought at Echallens. (The often-repeated notice of his death at Echichens instead of Echallens is one of many misreadings, attributable probably to obscure handwriting, that found their way into the Dictionnaire historique et biographique de la Suisse.)
Some additional history is given in connection with the factory at Wesserling. Jean Johannot had established a cloth business in Geneva in 1775. He prospered, and eventually became a city counsellor there. He was involved in the revolt of 1782 (the citizens attempted to take power from the ruling nobility), for which he was banished. He found his way to Brussels, and it was during his stay there, late in 1785, that his second wife, Marie Charlotte Aguiton, met Benjamin Constant. He became acquainted with the Bidermann business, and in 1786 became manager at Wesserling. He opposed the exorbitant taxes levied on his employees by the local nobility, and in 1789 found himself placed at the head of a local rebellion. He was involved in national political activities from that period until he became a deputy to the National Convention in 1792 that voted for the execution of the king. His duties brought him to Paris, and he rarely returned to Wesserling. At the time the birth of his son Elisabeth Edouard was registered at Vaucresson, 05 prairial V (24 may 1797), his residence was Rue de Faubourg St. Honoré no. 45, in Paris. He was certainly at Vaucresson, acting as mayor, before 1810. After the restoration, in 1816, he found it necessary to leave France for his homeland, retiring to Echallens. However, one account indicates he deeded property at Vaucresson to his son, who may have remained in that area.
A number of reports to the Convention from his pen were printed by the Convention and have survived. He was concerned with putting the central bank on a sound footing, as well as a number of other measures necessary for the survival of the new Republic.
Information about his connection with the Bidermann company is on the internet: Service éducatif et culturel des musées de Mulhouse, Les quatres saisons d'une indienne, 2001, http://www.mulhouseum.uha.fr/site/medias/_fiche_pdf/MDC-TdA-003.pdf.
His third marriage, to his former mistress, is said to be recorded at Paris (Archives de Paris, V 10 E 7, 10 floréal VII, see below). Strangely, this record gives his parentage as Jean Baptiste Johannot and Marguerite Guigal. Was the intent of this deception to conceal the fact that he was born in Geneva, and to make him appear to be a native of France? (The Archives de Paris has recently posted the indexes to the reconstructed Etat Civil on its web site. The index card for this marriage gives the date 18 Mesidor X, with a somewhat different version of his wife’s name, a discrepancy that is difficult to understand!)
