The baptism of his first recorded child at Moudon, 15 apr 1730, says he was originally from Die en Dauphiné, then naturalized at Neuchâtel (baptism in 1739 also mentions Cormondreche). His marriage is not recorded at Moudon, but it might have taken place during the gap in the marriage records there, 28 mar 1729 to 24 jan 1731 (a systematic analysis of the surviving records of the notaries during that period might help to repair this loss).
After local authorities questioned this couple in 1699 regarding their adherence to the Catholic faith (they responded by claiming to be deaf), it has been supposed that they emmigrated. One idea is that they are connected with a Deville family on Martinique. A letter from the notary Roque of Agen to Samuel Henry Gelieu 18 oct 1732 names the children as Joseph, Anne, another Anne, and Jeanne, who, as cousins of the late Bernardin Gelieu, stand to inherit from his estate.
