Colonel in the service of Sardinia. In another of those errors perhaps attributable to obscure handwriting, the Dictionnaire historique et biographique de la Suisse says he was born in 1735. The baptismal record is clear. The same reference also says that Jean Isaac Vullyamoz, the one who married Françoise Louise Burnand, was his brother. This assertion, too, is contrary to the baptismal records, though occasionally such records give an incorrect parentage.

In the baptismal records of his children, he is listed with many titles, such as "Lieutenant civil et procureur fiscal à Lausanne", "citoyen de Lausanne et châtelain de l'Eveché de Lausanne", and so forth.
On the occasion of the baptism of his son George Salomon Humbert, in 1791, the following additional notation is found, explaining why a number of baptismal records affecting this family were amended:
"N.B.: Quoique tous les enfans de cette famille n'ayent été enrégistrés précédemment que sous le nom de Vullyamoz, le Père a exigé que j'ajoutasse ici celui de du Pont parce que dit-il, il a été découvert par une ancienne lettre de Bourgeoisie que tel est le véritable nom de la famille dit Vullyamoz."
This notation, affecting only the baptism of 1791, was followed by others appended to additional baptisms, indicated as follows:
"N.B.: Le mot Dupont a été adjouté par délibération du Conseil de Lausanne du 26e Aoust 1794."
"Le mot Dupont a été ajouté ensuitte du délibéré de la Section Economique du 30e avril 1810."
The reason for this amendment is somewhat involved. Toward the end of the ancien régime, it was fashionable to be able to use a compound name, suggesting nobility and status. This tendency led to some protracted arguments about the legitimacy of some of the names, such as the well-known controversy about Falconnet dit Palézieux.
The Dictionnaire Historique et Biographique de la Suisse explains, under the orthographically defective heading Pont-Wullyamoz, that this family originated in Rivaz and St. Saphorin (district of Lavaux) as early as 1350, and was admitted under the name "Pont-Wullyamoz" to citizenship in Lausanne in 1553. "Wullyamoz" is defective because in the old script, "W" was interchangeable with "Vu" (recall that "W" in French is called "double V", and that in Latin script, "V" and "U" were interchangeable). Thus, we are used to seeing Wllieme for Vullieme, etc. This convention affects all the "Vu" names, including Vully. Wullyamoz is therefore redundant as a Swiss name, or else a Germanized version of Vullyamoz. Vullyamoz was often spelled in the records of Lausanne, with perfect clarity, as Wllyamoz. We do not usually encounter Wullyamoz in the records of Lausanne. The title of Baron de Pont-Wullyamoz was created by the Austrian government for Alphonse Rodolphe Barthélemy Casimir Vullyamoz (1787-1847), son of Jean Isaac Vullyamoz and Françoise Louise Burnand, thus fossilizing the novel spelling.
Through the assistance of Jean-Jacques Eggler, adjoint archivist of the city of Lausanne, we have been able to assemble some further details about Louis Samuel Benjamin Vullyamoz. From 1794 to 1798, he held the positions of "Lieutenant et Procureur Fiscal," his duties consisting of collecting fines, making arrests, managing criminal investigations, executing sentences, and overseeing prisons (Livre des serments B60, 62-65). After the revolution of 1798, he was elected 06 oct 1803 to the post of Inspecteur de Police, a position which he held until 1811 (AVL RB 14/4, 75, RB 14/7, 295-296). After the death of his wife, he fell on hard times, and by 1816 had to rely on assistance from the Bourse des Pauvres de Lausanne.
