The family name is often spelled Didey or Dieday in early records. Some modern records, especially from Geneva, use Diédey, thus with an extra syllable, and not consistent with the old spelling Didey. One theory makes this name a derivative of the given name Didier, which, if correct, strongly suggests that the accent mark is a modern innovation.

He is called Jean Diedey, citizen of Lausanne, in the church records at Le Locle, with one exception: the burial record in July, 1784 at Le Locle for Jean Jacob Diedey, son of the late Daniel Diedey and of Dame "Farestier" (presumably this should be Forestier), bourgeois de Lausanne, is very likely his. The age at death is given as 81, which yields a birth year of about 1725. From this information, it is clear that this is the Jean Jacob Bonaventure Diedey baptised at Lausanne 16 may 1725. While the only wife of "Jean Diedey" mentioned at Le Locle is Anne Magdelaine Chevalier, the death record in 1784 for "Madame Chevalier" says she was the "belle-mère" or step-mother of "Monsieur Diedey". Exactly who this Monsieur was is not certain, but the statement raises the possibility (if the Monsieur in quesiton was the son of the present Jean Didey) that Anne Magdelaine Chevalier was the second wife of Jean Diedey, perhaps explaining why this couple does not seem to be mentioned at Lausanne. However, it is also possible that she was indeed his mother-in-law of the present Jean Didey (the other meaning of belle-mère), and thus the mother of Anne Magdelaine Chevalier. If that is the correct interpretation, then Anne may have been the only wife, but in that case, her death record has not been found. We have not yet checked the death records of Le Locle after 1823.
In the course of a long and very detailed account of the industry and artisans of Le Locle (Frédéric Samuel Ostervald Description des montagnes et vallées qui font partie de la principauté de Neuchâtel et Valangin, second edition, Neuchâtel, chez Samuel Fauche, libraire, 1766, p. 73), we find the following statement: "Le Sr. Jean Diedey est renommé pour les faux étuis de montres de poche, en chagrin, ou imitant le jaspe et l'agathe." He was thus a maker or decorator of the outer cases of pocket watches.
Given the specialized nature of Diedey's profession, we might wonder if he apprenticed in Geneva. For that matter, neither he nor his father seems to be included in the 1738 list of the bourgeois of Lausanne, suggesting that they had already moved away.

While her parentage is clear, we did not find her baptism at Le Locle, where at least three of her siblings were baptised, nor at Lausanne. Further, we did not find her parents' marriage at Lausanne. The movements of this family remain to be discovered.
