His obituary in the Vevay Reveille appeared on 09 mar 1872, listing his full name as George Henry Tardy. It gives his date of death, 05 mar 1872, and his exact age, 82 years, 8 months, 15 days. By the normal arithmetic of dates (remembering that 1872 was a leap year), these figures yield a birth date of 19 jun 1789. This is the same date we found in the church records of Pampigny, thus confirming that we have found the right George Tardy. The obituary says he arrived in Vevay, unmarried, in 1819. Perret Dufour's account of the history of the Swiss settlement at Vevay says that George Tardy and "two or three other men" came to Vevay with James Bolens, who paid for their passage. The men then worked off their debt to Bolens over a period of several years. Bolens was certainly the James F. Bolens mentioned in some of the early records of Vevay, possibly the same James Bolens who was living in 1850 with his wife Julia in Preble Co., Ohio (James age 57, born in Switzerland, his wife Julia age 53, also born in Switzerland).
There were other Tardys in early Vevay. One was Jean François Tardy, whose obituary in the Vevay Reveille states that he was born 25 aug 1795 and died 21 jul 1883, although his age on census records is inconsistent. The 1795 date is also listed in his naturalization papers of 1827. Another was Jean Gabriel Tardy, born about 1778. They probably came from Pampigny as well, where the family was numerous, or else from a neighboring parish. They have not been conclusively identified.
His will of 08 jan 1869 eventually came before the Indiana Supreme Court, and is given in full in the Report of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of the State of Indiana, vol. 46, pp. 135-141 (May term, 1874). The will and the proceedings name the children and the husbands of the daughters.
