Louis ROBERT       (ID #I11926)

(male)
Father: Pierre ROBERT (b. bef 1497, d. aft 1533)

Family 1 : Pernette TRIPOD (dates unknown)
  1. +Gabriel ROBERT (d. bef 1608)
  2.  Jean ROBERT (dates unknown)
  3.  Pierre ROBERT (dates unknown)

On 12 may 1593, Egrège Laurent du Cloz, notary of Crousaz-sous-Féchy, made a "reconnaissance" on behalf of his step-sons and wards Pierre and Jean, sons of the late Louis Robert (ACV Fh 169 fol. 222v). This document does not name the widow of Louis Robert, who presumably next married Laurent du Cloz. Possibly the name of the widow will be revealed in other reconnaissances for Laurent du Cloz.

The widow, however, is apparently Pernette Tripod, who is cited in a reconnaissance of 15 dec 1599 (Fh 168 fol. 265) as the mother of Discret Pierre and Jehan Robbert. This Pernette Tripod had purchased property from the estate of a Jean Robbert in 1588. The other son of Louis, Gabriel, was apparently already an adult in 1593, but nothing has come to our attention so far that would suggest he is the son of a different mother.

Michael ROBERT       (ID #I14311)

(male)
Father: Petrus ROBERT (d. bef 1478)

Family 1 : Jeannette GACZEL (d. aft 1492)
  1. +Louis ROBERT (b. bef 1477, d. bef 1522)
  2.  Pierre ROBERT (dates unknown)

It is not yet clear how he is related to the priest Michael Roberti, originally from Châtel, who is noted at Féchy as early as 1482, and who may have survived the Reformation.

The present Michael is certainly the one who made a "reconnaissance" for a terrier compiled by Nicod Brasier, and whose son Louis made a "reconnaissance" dated 30 apr 1506 for a later terrier compiled by Jean Brasier. These two documents are mentioned in the terrier ACV Fh 211 in a reconnaissance by various descendants of Michel 1567-1569 (fols. 207 ff.), in the course of which we find mention also of an additional reconnaissance made by Pierre, brother of the present Michel, resulting from a purchase by this Pierre from "Estevene fillie de feu Pierre Robert femme de Michiel Mutignier d'Aulbonne". The reconnaissance in question, or one closely related to it, is dated 31 jan 1478 (Fh 130, fol.57v), for property subject to the Confratria Sancti Spiritus de Albona by Stephaneta relicta Michaelis Mutigny (Mutignyez) saltoris Albone filia quondam Petri Roberti fabri Albone. A Petrus Roberti de Chastel made a reconnaissance on 06 jul 1456 for property at Gimel that he had purchased from Anthonius de Gimel (Fh 105, fol. 293v). Taken together, these citations imply that this Michael or Michel Robert/Roberti was a son of Petrus, but it is still not entirely clear which Petrus he was.

There is a testament dated 01 mar 1494 (ACV C XX 22/83) for Dominus Humbertus Roberti de Chastel, curatus de Pisy, in which he names as his universal heir his brother Michael Robert (whose wife is Johanneta). The most obvious solution is that Michael, Petrus, and Humbertus were brothers, sons of an earlier Petrus Robert, and that Stephaneta was their sister. And the Petrus Robert in question would seem to be the Petrus Roberti of Aubonne, faber, who also left sons Johannes and Petrus (and perhaps others), cited at Chastel in the terriers Fi 85 and Fi 55.

An unsourced dossier at the ACV mentions that the present Michel was also known by the alias Fabri, another link to the family Châtel, unless this is an instance of a conflation of the unknown sources of the dossier.

The on-line catalogue of the ACV, DAVEL, has recently been updated to include the old, very detailed inventories of the "Nouveaux Titres", which were transferred to other sections of the ACV, notably Série C, without a record of where each of these documents was now located. By searching the new records in DAVEL, it has been possible to locate specific documents in Série C that have been identified only by date, by the fact that they match with the date shown in the inventory of the Nouveaux Titres. One of these relating to Michael Roberti (evidently not the priest) is of interest: "C XXII NF12584 Cote ancienne: Nouveaux Titres: 3685 Intitulé: 1492. juillet 17. It seems likely that this Jeannette (undoubtedly Johanneta in the original document) was the mother of Michael. If so, there is room for considerable confusion, as several different members of the Roberti family seem to have had wives with the same name.

Michel ROBERT       (ID #I11722)

(male)
Father: Johannes ROBERT (d. abt 1493)
Mother: Johanneta _____ (dates unknown)

He left a bequest to his niece Andrée Berger, daughter of his sister Collette Robert, in his testament of 1517, according to the genealogy of the Bégoz family prepared by Henri de Mandrot (Recueil des généalogies vaudoises, 1912, but containing serious errors—the testament in question has not been located). De Mandrot calls this family Roberti, but at that period, Roberti was simply the Latin form of the name Robert, cited in the area of Féchy as early as the end of the 15th Century. Michel, a priest, came from Châtel, but was known at Féchy at least as early as 1482, when he had presumably reached the age of majority, thus placing his birth in 1457 or earlier. He was still vicar at Féchy when the Reformation was introduced by the Bernese occupation, in 1536, and he was apparently still living at Féchy, or else with his brother Johannes at Châtel, in 1543 (however, see below, the date 1543, from the terrier Fi 55, is likely misleading).

The terrier ACV Fi 55, dating nominally from 1543, provides additional details. Among the censiers subject to Noble Amedeus de Viry for property at Châtel are two sets of Robert descendants: First, Johannes and Dominus Michael, a priest, brothers, sons of the late Johannes Roberti who was in turn a son of the late Petrus Roberti of Châtel: They held property that had been recognized in 1493 (ACV Fi 85) by Johannes Roberti son of the late Petrus Roberti. Second, Perrodus et Petrus, brothers, sons of the late Petrus Roberti, and their nephews Franciscus and Guilliermus Roberti, sons of the late Petrus Roberti: They held property that had been recognized in 1493 by Petrus son of the late Petrus Roberti. (While the massive reconnaissance for Noble Amedeus de Viry is dated in 1543, the fact that it is in Latin, and that Michael Roberti is still identified as a priest, along with many other details, suggests that most of the material in Fi 55 was compiled much earlier, before the Bernese occupation of the Pays de Vaud in 1536.)

This would all make sense, except for the statement that Franciscus et Guilliermus were sons of the late Petrus, who would have to be another brother of Perrodus and Petrus. While this is not impossible at that time—there are many examples of families with two or even three sons who had the same name—it seems possible that this is an example of a scribal error. Are there any other references to Franciscus and Guilliermus? While no clear explanation has surfaced, there is a somewhat similar mention later in Fi 55: On for 556, we find tenants Perrodus and Henricus, sons of the late Petrus Roberti, and Guilliermus their nephew, son of (the late ?) Henricus Roberti. Here again, there would have to be two brothers of the same name, in this case Henricus. If it can be established that the two lists refer to the same parties, we might suppose that scribe was confused, and that the situation was more likely that Petrus, son of the original Petrus Roberti of Aubonne, left three sons, Petrus, Perrodus, and Henricus, and that Henricus had since died, leaving sons Franciscus and Guilliermus, with the latter possibly deceased before Fi 55 was completed.

Can the house at Rolle be identified in the terriers, perhaps in Fi 85 (1493) or Fi 55 (nominally 1543)? As was pointed out by Olivier Dubuis in his research on Mont-le-Vieux, as there never was a church at Châtel, it is possible that the designation "Michael Roberti capellanus de Chastel", found in several documents, was intended to indicate first his occupation or condition, followed by his place of origin. However, we might instead suppose that the passage indicates the existence of a separate "chapel" of some sort at Châtel, with a titular "chaplain" responsible for its operation and maintenance. In any case, the origins of this Michael at Châtel are firmly established by the information recorded in Fi 55, even if it reflects the situation prior to the imposition of the Reformation in 1536 rather than in 1543.

The more pressing question about the sale in 1513 is the relationship between Dom Michael Roberti and Claudius Roberti. The terrier Fi 85, from 1493, lists a number of properties belonging to the notary Aymonodus Roberti at Rolle, among which we can probably identify the house in question. Also, Fi 55 states that Claudius Roberti was the son of Aymonodus, who, from C XX 336/6, had already died by 1513. But in Fi 55, what may be the same property is shared not with Dom Michael Roberti, but instead with Ludovicus Roberti of Féchy and Johannes Roberti of Chastel, who were likely his "universal" testamentary heirs, and so presumably sons of one or two brothers of Dom Michael.

In fact, we might infer from Fi 55, relating to the property that was sold in 1513, that the priest Michael Roberti had already died by the time the property had fallen to Ludovicus (son of the Michel who was not the priest, in turn apparently the son of a Petrus Roberti alias Fabri) and to Johannes son of Johannes. If that is correct, then it may be that the Johannes who held a share of this property in Fi 55 was a nephew and heir of the priest Michael Roberti — perhaps a son of Michael's brother Johannes. There are also other passages in Fi 55 in which this Claudius Roberti has died and has been succeeded by his son Amedeus. There are also mentions of other members of the Roberti (alias Fabri) connected with Chastel, but the exact relationships still have not been teased out of the massive text, transcription and analysis of which is still underway.

Father: Louis ROBERT (b. bef 1477, d. bef 1522)

  1. +François ROBERT (b. bef 1539, d. bef 1592)

The latest reference to Michel Robert dit Gadel that we have found in the terriers, prior to the appearance of François son of the late Michel Robert dit Gadel in 1564, is his appearance with his brother Louis to make a reconnaissance on 22 sep 1533 (ACV FH 146, fol. 63v).

Question: Is the alias Gadel simply a variant of Gaczel, the family name of the wife of the first Michel Robert?

Petrus ROBERT       (ID #I15320)

(male)
Family 1 :
  1. +Johannes ROBERT (d. abt 1493)
  2. +Petrus ROBERT (d. bef 1510)

He is the earliest of the Robert family identified clearly in the extant terriers for Mont-le-Vieux (ACV Fi 85, commissaire Michel Quisard, 1493). The preceding terrier, the "Grosse Balay" now at the AEF (1404) apparently does not mention the Robert family at Mont-le-Vieux, but family names were still unsettled at that period. Olivier Dubuis, author of a detailed study of these terriers as they relate to Mont-le-Vieux, suggested that the properties held by the Robert family circa 1493 had probably been part of those held by Stephanus Bouczars (Bonczars?), apparently also known as le Quen, in 1404. In the absence of any complete terriers for the seigneurie of Mont-le-Vieux between 1404 and 1493, we will have to rely on other lines of evidence, such as terriers for neighboring jurisdictions, to fill this long gap. One such terrier is Fj 69, 1464, for property subject to the priory of Brussins, in which (fol. 255) there is a reconnaissance by Johannes son of the late Petrus Roberti alias Fabri of Chastel. (It should be noted that the descriptions of many of the tenants at that period are often grammatically ambiguous: it is frequently not clear, for example, whether it was Johannes or his father Petrus who bore the alias Fabri, or was a resident of Chastel. Moreover, even then such a statement is made in a way that is unambiguous, that may be only the interpretation of the scribe, who compiled the statement from unknown sources that might themselves have been at least as vague.)

The terrier Fi 12, for the abbey of Bonmont, 1453, mentions Petrus Roberti, a subject of the seigneur de Viry, as a tenant of neighboring properties at Essertines. To be cited in this way, Petrus would have reached the age of majority, thus placing his birth no later than 1428. It is possible that some mention of him or of his predecessors might be found in the earlier terriers for the abbey. The terrier Fj 3, for the priory of Romainmotier, as well as some related terriers, mention a Guio (elsewhere also Guido or Guigo) Roberti who held properties in Gillier, Perruys, Bière, etc.,

A careful reading of Fi 85 suggests that this Petrus Roberti, likely from Aubonne, came to hold properties at Chastel as a result of a loan he made to Noble Jaquetus de Viry, during the tenure of the latter as Seigneur of Mont-le-Vieux (at least as early as 1420, until his death in 1444, when succeeded by his sons Amedeus (III) and Philibertus de Viry), of which half had been repaid, the debt secured by various properties, which were henceforth held by the Roberti family. There are several references to this transaction in Fi 85 (notable fols. 455 and 456) and also, with a couple new details, in Fi 55. The properties in question, or some of them, appear to have been held previously (and had probably since reverted to Jaques de Viry as a result of the deaths of the tenants without heirs) by either Franciscus de Platea or Nobilis Nycodus de Divona.

(There seem to be differing opinions concerning the genealogy of the de Viry family. We follow the detailed account of Louis de Charrière, 1879, La baronnie de Rolle et de Mont-le-Vieux, étude féodale, Mémoires et documents publiés par la Société d'histoire de la Suisse romande 34:35-122. However, de Charrière had to rely on secondary sources for some points. De Charrière includes a note (p. 121) about the documents that were lost as a result of the Burla-Papey insurrection, which burned a large archive at Rolle on 08 may 1802. Among well over 100 terriers and similar volumes lost that day was one by [Aymonodus] Robert, for the Seigneurie of Rolle, dating from 1470.)

There are still some major questions that need to be resolved:

First, the connection of the Michel Roberti who left descendants at Féchy with the documented family at Chastel is still unknown. The most plausible connection is tha Michel is a son of the present Petrus, and that the priest Michel Roberti was his nephew, but no evidence has been found.

Second, the connection of the present Petrus, cited as a "faber" (blacksmith) at Aubonne with the Roberti family of Rolle, is still completely unknown. It is possible that the text of the sale of properties between these two branches (1513, ACV C XX 336/6) will provide some clues.

Petrus Roberti, faber of Aubonne, seems to be the Petrus junior, son of Franciscus Roberti of Bière, whose testament (or an extract of it) has survived, dated in 1417: "C XXII NF10337, Cote ancienne: Nouveaux Titres: 2618, Intitulé: 1418/19 février 2. The original document is believed to be catalogued as C XX 17/96, not yet examined. The substituary heirs are not listed in the catalogue description as clearly as we might wish; they are probably Stephanus, son of Mermetus Roberti, son of the testator, and Anthonia and Roleta, daughters of Stephanus Roberti. However, the substituary heirs were apparently not involved in the settlement of the estate. Instead, there are several mentions in Fi 85 (1493) of property that had been held in the past by Petrus and Mermetus Roberti. The further problem of "Petrus junior" as the only early Petrus mentioned in the catalogue description has at least two possible solutions: Franciscus must have had two sons named Petrus (senior and junior, a very common situation at that time), possibly from different mothers. The eldest Petrus might have died, or he might already have received his inheritance during his father's lifetime. In either case, there would be no necessity of his father naming him in the testament. It is to be noted, also, that none of the properties later held by the branch at Châtel are said to have come from "Petrus et Mermetus Roberti", but there is no evidence that they were in that area at such an early date. Thus, the absence of properties at Châtel that came from "Petrus et Mermetus Roberti" does not provide evidence that the Châtel branch has some different ancestry.

However, the heirs Petrus and Mermetus appear with their mother Margareta, widow of Franciscus Roberti, in Fh 119 (1427), with language that appears to indicate they are indeed both sons of Margareta. In later terriers, Petrus and Mermetus have made a partage but (1457) still hold some properties jointly. There is much more analysis to be done, as there are various Roberti mentioned in the terriers around Aubonne (ACV Série Fh) at last as far back as the middle of the 14th Century, where we noted a Ballus Roberti, son of Robertus Chardon. It is still not clear whether these records pertain to a single family.

The questions that need to be answered with respect to the ancestry of Petrus Roberti of Chastel thus may be summarized as follows:

  1. Exactly when did Petrus Roberti acquire property at Chastel, as a result of a loan to Noble Jaquetus de Viry? Is there any mention of this transaction prior to the quernet Fi 85 (1493, compiled from unknown earlier sources)?
  2. Was Petrus Roberti alias Fabri of Chastel the same man as Petrus Roberti junior, faber et burgensis Albone, who was the son and heir of Franciscus Roberti, faber et burgensis Albone and his wife Margareta?
  3. Or was Petrus Roberti alias Fabri of Chastel actually Petrus Roberti senior, hypothetical son of Franciscus, perhaps by a different wife, who had already made a "partage" or division with his father before the death of Franciscus, and thus was not mentioned in the testament of Franciscus in 1419?
  4. Or was Petrus Roberti alias Fabri of Chastel a descendant of one of the other Roberti who are mentioned in the area around Aubonne in earlier records?
  5. What is the connection between Franciscus Roberti and the Guyo, Guido, or Guigo Roberti who is also mentioned at Bière?
  6. Who were the "heirs" of Guyo Roberti, mentioned as tenants of adjacent properties in many places in Fi 85 and Fi 55?
  7. Can Guyo or Franciscus be traced back to the Ballus Roberti, son of Robertus Chardon of Aubonne in the mid-14th Century?

Petrus ROBERT       (ID #I16515)

(male)
Family 1 :
  1. +Michael ROBERT (b. bef 1442, d. aft 1494, BEF 1506)
  2.  Petrus ROBERT (d. bef 1494)
  3.  Humbertus ROBERT (d. 1494)
  4.  Stephaneta ROBERT (b. bef 1458, d. aft 1478)

If the terriers can be believed on this point, this should be Petrus Roberti, blacksmith, of Aubonne, but the evidence is difficult to interpret. His occupation, "faber", is cited directly for his daughter Stephaneta, and the unsourced dossier on the Robert family at the ACV also applies it to his son Michael. The problem to be resolved is how this Petrus connects with the family at Châtel, and to the priest Michael Roberti of Châtel and Féchy. The same parentage, Petrus Roberti, blacksmith, of Aubonne, seems to apply to Johannes and Petrus Roberti, brothers, at Châtel, holding various properties jointly in the terriers ACV Fi 85 and Fi 55. The fact that the apparent children of the original Petrus Roberti do not seem all to be listed in the same place, might be explained if he had children by more than one wife, or if the children, or some of them, had already made a "partage" or division among themselves.

Various citations in the terriers (e.g., Fi 55, a quernet dated 1543 but apparently compiled during roughly the preceding decade) appear to reflect his origins in the person of one Guido (Guyo, Guigo) Roberti of Bière, followed by a Franciscus Roberti (C XXII NF10337, Cote ancienne: Nouveaux Titres: 2618, intitulé: 1418/19 février 2. "Consultable seulement sur copie (numérique)"—the original document, believed to be C XX 17/96, has not yet been examined). The latter citation raises the possibility that Franciscus Roberti had two sons named Petrus (one of the heirs is Petrus junior, but there is no mention of a Petrus senior), but there seems to be no direct mention of that situation in the other sources located so far. However, the existence of two men called Petrus Roberti of Aubonne is one possible explanation for what appear to be two sets of descendants from such a person, one set including the branch at Châtel, the other the branch at Féchy. From the summary in the ACV catalogue, it is not clear whether the substituary heir, "Etienne fils de Mermet de Villars-sur-Perroy demeurant à St. Livres", should be interpreted as Etienne Robert, a grandson of Franciscus Roberti, or as Etienne de Villars, from a separate family living at St.-Livres. Are there any other references in the early 15th Century to a Robert family at Villars, Perroy, or St.-Livres? If the correct solution is that Franciscus had two sons named Petrus, but left a bequest only the younger of them, the most likely explanation would be that Petrus senior had already received his inheritance from his father, or else, that he had already died without heirs.

Petrus ROBERT       (ID #I16516)

(male)
Father: Petrus ROBERT (d. bef 1478)

Michael Roberti made a "reconnaissance" for a terrier compiled by Nicod Brasier, and his son Ludovicus made a "reconnaissance" dated 30 apr 1506 for a later terrier compiled by Jean Brasier. These two documents are mentioned in the terrier ACV Fh 211 in a reconnaissance by various descendants of Michael 1567-1569 (fols. 207 ff.), in the course of which we find mention also of an additional reconnaissance made by Petrus, brother of Michael, resulting from a purchase by this Petrus from "Estevene fillie de feu Pierre Robert femme de Michiel Mutignier d'Aulbonne". However, no relationship is stated between Petrus brother of Michael and the Petrus whose daughter was Stephaneta. It is clear from the text that they must be two separate persons, both called Petrus, but related in some way.

There is also a testament of Dominus Humbertus Roberti de Chastel, curatus de Pisy, dated 01 mar 1494 (ACV C XX 22/83) mentioning his brother Michael Robert, whose wife was Johanneta. The most likely solution is that these were three brothers, Michael, Petrus, and Humbertus, Petrus having already died before 1494, all of them the sons of an earlier Petrus Robert who had died before 1478.

From the fact that the testament of Humbertus does not mention his brother Petrus or any descendants of Petrus, we infer that this Petrus, brother of Humbertus, likely left no heirs. If that is the case, then any inheritance from the elder Petrus would likely fall to Ludovicus/Louis. In Fi 55, dating supposedly from 1543 but including text that seems to have been written in the 1530's, there are a few properties shared by a Ludovicus Roberti of Féchy and a Johannes son of Johannes Roberti of Chastel. But there are other Roberti mentioned as well, including a Henricus son of a Petrus of Chastel who shares some property with Johannes son of Johannes.

Petrus ROBERT       (ID #I5508)

(male)
Father: Petrus ROBERT (b. bef 1419, d. bef 1464)

Family 1 : Johanneta RONCIGNIODI (d. aft 1521)
  1.  Perrodus ROBERT (dates unknown)
  2.  Petrus ROBERT (dates unknown)
  3. +Henricus ROBERT (dates unknown)
  4.  Girarda ROBERT (dates unknown)
  5. +Anthonia ROBERTI (dates unknown)

The information about this Petrus seems confused and even contradictory, in the two principal sources, the terriers ACV Fi 85 (1493) and Fi 55 (dated in 1543, but showing clear signs of having been compiled over a period of years, possibly beginning as early as 1531). His wife was Johanneta, but this is also the name of the wife of Johannes, his brother. He may have had sons Perrodus, Petrus, and Henricus, but the two clearest statements of his heirs imply, in one place, Perrodus, Petrus, and Petrus (fol. 258), and in another place, Perrodus, Henricus, and Henricus (fol. 556). At some point in the preparation of Fi 55, there were at least two living sons (including Perrodus), and one of the sons (either Petrus or Henricus) had died, leaving sons of his own, Franciscus and Guilliermus, or else just one son, Franciscus (perhaps Guilliermus had died around that time). It is also very possible that "Perrodus" in the second list is actually an error for Petrus, as the items immediately preceding this list concern "Henricus et Petrus Roberti, fratres". By 1543, the name Perrodus, very common a generation or two earlier, had become fairly rare. Whether any further conclusions can be drawn from these two sources is not yet clear.

However, ther terrier Fg 263, for the charitable hospital of Rolle, compiled 1525-1548 by Ludovicus Challeti of Perruys with additions by Petrus Pictet of Rolle, contains some surprising details concerning Johanneta and the general circumstances of the Roberti family.

First, on fol. 153, we find:

Anthonius de Gebennis alias Billiardi de Gimel, 29 dec 1541, veluti causam habens in hac parte Leodegarii Champion predicti loci de Gemel, tam vigore cuiusdam legati per Jenetam (later Johannetam) relictam Petri Fabri de Chastel (Fabri is an alias of Roberti at Chastel, and he is called Petrus Roberti below) heredem quondam Venerabilis viri Domini Nycodi Rancigniodi (elsewhere often Roncigniodi) capellani de Rotulo, necnon predictum Leodegarium Champion a quo ipse confitens causam habet ut supra, et Girardam eiusdem Leodegarii uxorem filiamque quondam supradictorum Petri Roberti et Johannete conjugum predicto hospitali sive rectori eiusdem (in other words, a bequest or directive - see below, legato sive ordinatione - was made by Johanneta, and also - necnon - by Leodegarius and his wife, who was a daughter of Johanneta; this fact suggests that the bequest to the hospital might have been made on the occasion of the death of Petrus Roberti, by his widow and children, to endow a mass in his memory) de decem florenis auri parviponderis et sex solidis monete census (the cense or rent of 10 florins 6 sols is equivalent to a 5% annual interest on a principal of 210 florins, see below) pro una magna missa eddomadali qualibet die Veneris de Quinque Plagis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi alta et intelligibi voce emii (i.e., on every Friday, the Mass on the Five Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ shall be celebrated in a loud and intelligible voice), uno liberame in fine eiusdem misse dicendo in magno altari ecclesie predicti hospitalis et per rectorem ipsius ut de eodem legato sive ordinatione constat publico instrumento per Egregium virum Rodulphum Picteti notarium publicum 18 jan 1521 (from the date, Johanneta must have been the widow of the second Petrus Roberti of Chastel) recepto et signato ipsoque decem florenos parviponderis et sex solidos monete census assignaverunt et assectaverunt ipsi prenominati Johanneta relicta dicti Petri Roberti, Leodegarius Champion, et Girarda eius uxor in et super certis rebus et possessionibus in ipso instrumento limitatis et confinatis solvereque debebantur et tenebantur ipsi Leodegarius Champion et Girarda eius uxor de ipsis decem florenis parviponderis et sex solidis monete census octo florenos parviponderis annuales, et Anthonia filia quondam dictorum Petri Roberti et Johannete quondam conjugum et soror predicte Girarde uxorque Benedicti de Rippa de Rotulo alios dos florenos parviponderis et sex solidos census restantes ipsosque duos florenos parviponderis et sex solidos monete census pro eadem Anthonia sive Francisco Tissoti eius filio (thus, as of 1521, Johanneta, Leodegarius and his wife, and Anthonia and her son had pledged to pay the 10 florins 6 sols, secured by various properties that they held, not specified here), de presenti eidem hospitali solvit annualiter Mauricius Bellisat habitator Rotuli ipsosque eidem hospitali recognovit prout in eius recognicione apparet (as of the present date, 1541, the rent due from Anthonia and her heirs, 2 florins 6 sols, was being paid by Mauricius Bellisat, see above, fol. (The sums mentioned here seem unusually large for any rents collected by a charitable hospital, implying that Johanneta left a very substantial estate. In fact, the amount of the bequest is somewhat vague. The rents derived from it are described in two places, the present reconnaissance and the one for Mauricius Bellisat on fol. 89. Bellisat had assumed the annual rent at 5% on a principal of 50 florins, representing half of a bequest of 100 florins made by Johanneta, and for the obligation of 50 florins, Mauricius paid a rent of 2 florins 6 sols. Anthonius de Gebennis paid a total of 8 florins, presumably consisting of 2 florins 6 sols for the other 50 florins of principal of the original 100 florins, plus an additional 5 florins 6 sols, representing an original principal of 160 florins. The total of the original bequest or obligation, then, must have been 210 florins, of which 100 was shared equally between Leodegarius and Anthonia, and the other 110 florins owed by Leodegarius and his wife alone. Completing the arithmetic, there were 12 sols per florin, and 20 sols per livre.)

This reconnaissance in turn leads us to the following, on fol. 89:

Mauricius Bellissat carpentator habitator Rotuli, 29 dec 1541 Style of the Nativity, confitetur ... se debere et legitime solvere teneri ac se et suos predictos debere constituit honestis viris Petro Sonier ? et Matheo Vannesiz burgensibus Rotuli gubernatoribusque et sindicis ipsius villie Rotuli ac rectoribus predicti hospitalis pauperum Rotuli et suis in eodem hospitali successoribus ex vendicione per ipum confitentem supra nominatis gubernatoribus predicte ville Rotuli ac rectoribus predicti hospitalis precio quinquaginta florenorum auri parviponderis facta ut de ipsa vendicione apparet instrumento per Egregium virum Rodulphum Picteti notarium publicum recepto 1540 (day and month not given), videlicet triginta solidos bone monete cursalis in huiusmodi patria census per ipsum confitentem et suos predictos eisdem rectoribus et suis quibus supra in quolibet festo Nativitatis Domini Nostri Jesu Cristi dandos et perpetue persolvendos, et quiquidem triginta solidi census fuerunt per ipsum confitentem in ipso premencionato vendicionis instrumento assignati et assectati ipsosque de presenti assectat et assignat ipse confitens pro se et suis predictis levandos, habendos, et perpetue percipiendos in et super una domo ipsius confitentis cum curtili retro ipsam domum existens sitis in villa Rotuli in carreria superiori juxta domum et curtile Francisci Tissoti a borea, aream et ortum Sebastiani Cohendoz a vento, et carerias publicas a juria et lacu, et super fondis, juribus, inanciis, et pertinenciis suis universis, et qui quinquaginta floreni parviponderis precesserunt de centum florenis per Johannetam relictam Petri Roberti de Chastel filiamque quondam Roleti Rancigniodi (elsewhere usually Ronsigniodi or similar) cappelle hospitalis Rotuli (dative case, this is a bequest of 50 florins to the chapel of the hospital; however, this "bequest" was in fact a perpetual obligation and promise to pay annual rents on a principal of 100 florins, redeemable in the future through the payment of 100 florins by Johanneta or her heirs - in effect, the "bequest" was not actually paid as a lump sum, but as an "interest only" mortgage) pro una missa edomadali traditis et legatis, et deinde per Franciscum filium quondam Johannis Tissoti de Gillier ac Anthonie ipsius Johannis Tissot quondam uxoris filieque predicte Johannete heredum (that is, Franciscus and Anthonia were the heirs of Johanneta, implying that Johanneta had died prior to the date of the quitclaim described below, in 1540) pro medietate ipsius predicte Johannete relicte dicti Petri Fabri (Fabri is an alias of this Roberti family) eius (referring to Franciscus Tissot) avie materne dicto hospitali sive rectoribus ipsius tradictis quo mediante ? rectores predicti hospitalis ipsum Franciscum Tissoti de triginta libris sive de ipsis quinquaginta florenis parviponderis pro medietate premencionati legati predictorum centum florenorum quictaverit ut de ipsa quictacione apparet publico instrumento per me notarium et commissarium subsignatum recepto 29 nov 1540, et qui supra mentionati triginta solidi census possunt reddemi et reachetari per ipsum confitentem et suos predictos ab eisdem rectoribus predicti hospitalis et suis quibus supra successoribus semper et perpetue secundum bonos usus patrie et loci precio supradictorum quinquaginta florenorum parviponderis, witnesses Discretus Gabriel Begueti (=Begoz) notarius et burgensis Albone, Stephanus Mugnerii de Pisi, et honestus Anthonius de Gebennenis alias Billiard de Gimel, with signature and paraphe of Ludovicus Challeti. (If we have understood the nature of the transactions recounted here, Franciscus had sold his interest in the house in question to Mauricius in 1540, and Mauricius had in turn assumed the rent of 30 sols, equivalent to 2 florins 6 sols, the hypothetical principal of 50 florins never changing hands. This rent of 2 florins 6 sols is further discussed in the reconnaissance of Anthonius de Gebennis alias Billiard, on fol. 153.)

If we have understood the nature of the original bequest or directive, and since there is no mention of a "testament", the most likely conclusion is that Petrus Roberti had died not long before January, 1521 (thus no later than 1520), and his widow Johanneta had endowed a memorial mass, secured by various properties. We can push this date back at least to 1510, based on a "clausula testamenti" for Dompnus Nycodus Roncinyodi cappellanum Rotuli, dated 25 dec 1510, in which he names his sister Johanneta, widow of the late Petrus Roberti of Chastel, as his sole heir (Fg 246, fol. 29, the original testament recorded by Stephanus de Ryva de Luyns, notarius).

As the three sons of Louis Robert made a reconnaissance on 30 mar 1522 (ACV Fh 144, fol. 575) in their own names, without a guardian, it follows that all of them must have reached the age of majority by that date, and that, therefore, they were all born before 1497. A dossier at the ACV indicates that some of the children of this Pierre were involved in a reconnaissance in 1559, although no sources are cited other than "Fh".
