Already cited as a notary and evidently over the age of majority in 1568, when he made a reconnaissance regarding fishing rights that had been inherited by his mother (who was then still living) through the Filliettaz family (ACV Fh 153, fol. 755v, dated 15 mar 1568).

She is named as a daughter of the late Egrege Michel Collat who had married the notary Louis Codurier of Nyon prior to his "reconnaissance" of 1579, in the terrier ACV Fh 171, fol. 410, dated 1606. The reconnaissance of 1579 was in a terrier compiled by Jean Marquis and Etienne Favre. This is probably the terrier Fh 163, where the index notes a reconnaissance for "Egrege Loys Coudurier et Jehanne Collat sa femme" on fol. 166, not yet examined. With this in mind, Fh 163 should be studied more closely in case it contains other references to the Collat family.

Two examples of the "paraphe" or notarial signature of Michel Collat, 1546
(ACV Fh 200, extracts compiled by Collat and relating to Gimel)
References to his profession as notary are found in the terriers of Aubonne, indicating he was active at least from 1542 to 1566. He is cited about 1556 as the lieutenant of Jean de Martine, who in turn was châtelain for noble Claude de Menthon, coseigneur of Aubonne. At some point, he was the custodian of the notarial registers of his father-in-law Estienne Filliettaz (cited, for example, in AEF Cc 159). The citations in the terriers and other documents need to be reviewed in hopes of arriving at more secure dates. (We assume here that a notary would normally be over the age of majority, at that time 25, there may have been exceptions.)
In ACV Fh 153, fol. 494v, there is a reconnaissance dated 17 jun 1566, for Marie fillie de feuz Egrege Estienne Fillietaz en son vivant notaire et bourgeois d'Aulbonne relaissée de feu Egrege Michiel Collat en son vivant aussi notaire & bourgeois dudict Aulbonne. This reconnaissance explains, to some degree, how Marie came to hold property that can be traced back to Michel Marquis: "des biens dernierement recognus es mains de feu Egrege Jehan Brasier notaire de Cuarnier allors des extentes et recognoissances de la baronnie et ressort d'Aulbonne commissaire 09 apr 1506 par Pierre filz de feuz Aymonet du Croux aultrement Foulat le vieux de Cursilliez agissant tant à son nom que de Pierre du Croux aultrement Foulat, aussi de Thivent, Anthoine, Maurys, et Glaude enfans de feu Jehan du Croux aultrement Foulat ses nepveurs, et paradvant aussi recognuz par honneste homme Gabriel Mestral tant comme conjoincte personne de Janne sa femme fillie de feu Michiel Marchis et de (should be par) Jehan Banquettaz de Payerne tuteur au nom de Pierre, Anthoine, et Jehan, ledict Jehan et Perronette sa femme fillie de feuz Michiel Marquis es mains de Provide homme Jehan Vulliet notaire adoncq aussi desdictes precedentes extentes d'Aulbonne commissaire, que premierement furent de Jehan du Cloz, par tiltre d'acquis faict comme elle assere. (A number of other properties are mentioned, with interesting details relating to the families who previously held them.)
In the same Fh 153, fols. 742v to the end, a series of reconnaissances relates to fishing rights originally held by the Darnex (D'Arnex) family at Aubonne, which by 1508 (Fh 137, fol. 879v, not yet photographed) were held jointly by Jean Filliettaz, Guilliaume Champion, Arthaud Fontannaz, Jean Bergier, and Anthoine Ruddel. Among these reconnaissances in Fh 153, fol. 755v, is one dated 15 mar 1568, for Discret Estienne filz de feu Egrege Michiel Collat en son vivant bourgeois d'Aulbonne conceuz de Marie fillie de feu Egrege Estienne Filliettaz en son vivant bourgeois dudict Aulbonne par ledict Estienne faicte, acting with approval of his mother, referring to the same fishing rights. Notably, these rights had come to his mother "par legitime succession dudict feu Jean Filliettaz." Thus, Estienne Filliettaz was most likely a son of Jean Filliettaz.
Her name is given in an entry in the terriers of Aubonne, 19 jan 1606, as the mother of Louis Valier, son of the late Jean who was in turn the son of the late Jaques (cited in the Valier genealogy by Olivier Dessemontet). Further details are found in the terrier Fh 38, fol. 12v (about 1580), giving her parentage and the name of her maternal grandfather, the notary Estienne Filliettaz.

The name is also given as Collon, although the problem may have more to do with difficult handwriting in the church records of Nyon.

His belle-mère was Marie Mone, perhaps sister or daughter of the minister Samuel Mone, who served at St. Livres and Yens about 1600-1605.
