Listed as nephew of Stefano Rocca, but Ambrosio's wife Octavia was also listed in another document as Stefano's niece. The latter relationship is apparently by marriage, and Ambrosio's origins in Avigliana makes us suppose that his mother was a sister of Stefano Rocca.
He was granted citizenship in Geneva, 31 jan 1588: "Ambroise Bonyn, filz de feu Jean Marye, natif de Villane [i.e., d'Avillane] en Piedmont." His presumed uncle Stefano Rocca had been granted citizenship 16 may 1580: "Estienne Roqua, filz de feu Jaques, natif d'Avillana en Piedmont."
The Archives Municipales de Lyon (http://www.archives-lyon.fr/static/archives/contenu/old/fonds/fdsanc.htm) has a number of items relating to a Bonin family from Avigliana. One Antoine Bonyn was syndic at Lyon 1542, 1547, 1552, 1558, and 1563, described as "Sr. de Servières". One of his fellow syndics, Antoine Grolier, had a wife Philiberte Bonyn. Also in the collections of Lyon are records of an Alexandre Ferrariis, a merchant from Milan, taxed in 1571-1572, and several others of this surname. The indexes on this web site contain a vast amount of information about individuals. Some specific items at the Archives Municipales de Lyon: AA 48, 49; CC 0150-2, 0151-1, 0152-3 (1571), CC 1042 (1557-8). From the available inventories, it appears one or more Bonin families resided in Lyon as early as the 14th Century, and possibly even earlier.
One connection that can apparently be ruled out is the printer Benoist Bonyn of Lyon, famous for publishing the extremely rare second edition of the Cymbalum Mundi of Bonaventure Des Périers (1538), a little anti-Catholic tract in the form of a four dramatic dialogues that the professors of the Sorbonne found very insulting. Benoist Bonyn left a testament of 04 feb 1551 that describes him as "citoien de Lion, filz de feux Barthélemy Bonyn et Marguerite sa femme de lieu de Sainct Vincent des Bloi pres d'Orleans". Therefore, he does not seem to be related to Antoine Bonyn from Avigliana who was in Lyon at the same time.
Information about Antoine Grolier and his family is given in the Armorial des bibliophiles de Lyonnais, Forez, Beaujolais, et Dombes (Julien Baudier and Léon Gallé, Société des bibliophiles lyonnais, 1907, vol. 1 p. 282-285).
In spite of the presence of an apparently indigenous Bonin family at Lyon, the same archives (in their inventory published in 1865, available on Google Books through this link, see page 218 of the section for Série CC) shows taxes due in 1512 for a house purchased from the heirs of Catherine Amyot by Geoffroy Bonin, piémontais.
[14620] Quoted by Bernhard von Gelieu, from Italian protestant church at Geneva, "A di 30 Luglio 1587 si sposo Ambrosio Bonin con Ottavia Ferrara amandue die Piemonta". This is not quite correct! Year is given as 1586! However, we think the 1586 is an error in the original record, because the marriage contract was signed 27 jul 1587.
