As wills of Hawkhurst Chittendens show, most of the men were weavers or clothiers. Thomas Chittenden left looms to his sons Thomas and John, as follows, but not to William. I give & bequeath to Thomas Chittend my eldest sonne one broade loome tha standeth next to the oast and the halfe of all the Implement(e)s or tacklings to the two loomes to be delyvered to him ymmediately after my decease....to John Chittenden my sonne the other broadloom and the other halfe of the said Implement(e)s or tackling(e)s belonging to the said bequeathed looms to be delyu(er)ed by my Executrix.
