He is widely believed to be Arnaud de Baux, descendant of the Seigneurs de Baux, branch of Orange, son of Leonard de Baux, who was born in 1505. This man was a protestant who took refuge in Geneva in 1576 as a result of the Wars of Religion in France, then settled in Morges. This is explained, briefly and not always clearly, in the inventory of the collection ACV P Nelty de Beausobre. At least two sons are attributed to Arnaud: Jean de Beaux or de Beausobre born in 1587, and Isaac, born in 1605. Isaac is said to have returned to France (specifically to Niort), and his descendants eventually settled in Berlin. Meanwhile, the branch that remained in Morges descends as follows: Jean (born in 1587) had a son François, born in 1624, who in turn had a son Jean Paul, born in 1661, who in turn had a son Benjamin, born in 1697, who in turn had a son Benjamin, born in 1737, who in turn had a son Henri Louis, born in 1770, who in turn had a son George Emanuel, born in 1820, whose son Henri Louis born in 1853 was the one who married a cousin, Lucie Georgina de Beausobre, and this couple had a daughter Nelty de Beausobre, born in 1887, who died in 1977, last descendant of the Swiss branch of the family. She left her estate to the commune of Morges.

His first wife was Clémence, daughter of Charles (or Abraham?) Diton. The second wife was Marthe du Fert or similar (other sources say de Feu).

At a baptism in Morges, 29 oct 1658, for François son of Jean François Babelay (his wife not named), the sponsors were François de Beausobre and his "bellesoeur" (sister-in-law) Catherine Joyet. This could be explained in two different ways: Either François was the brother of Jean Gabriel de Beausobre, whose wife was Catherine Joyet, or Catherine was the sister of the wife of François, Jeanne Joyet, or else two brothers had married two sisters.
