Notes for the parish of Gimel (includes Essertines, Mont-le-Grand [now Mont-sur-Rolle], and St. Oyens)
- Gimel, Essertines, Mont-le-Grand, St. Oyens: 1571-1608: The registers at
Gimel are heavily damaged. At some point, an attempt was made to repair them with
cellulose tape, which seems to have caused additional fading. The records are notable
for the extreme variability of spelling, as well as an astonishing assortment of "dit"
names. In this parish, there are a number of confusing names that are difficult to
equate with modern surnames. The worst of these are the "miller" names: Monnier, Mugnier,
Meusnier, etc. Depending on the pastor, these spellings could be entirely interchangeable.
Nevertheless, there are frequent references to individuals from neighboring parishes. The
minister who served from about 1599 to 1608 made helpful notations next to the earlier
baptisms and marriages, indicating some death dates and many details of later marriages. Unfortunately,
it appears the final pages of the marriage records from his tenure have been lost. That part of the manuscript now ends in
1603, but the minister often noted the date of marriage (though not necessarily the surname of the wife)
when he recorded the baptisms of each couple's first child.
In addition, there are occasional gaps in the records, and a large number of illegible entries
in some periods. The registers are on LDS microfilm #0128660. Mont-le-Grand was transferred to the parish of Rolle in 1629.
